"I actually liked the halloween synth.."

date: November 16, 2006

but good god dude you have to MASTER your songs.. it just ruins the whole experience.. I cant properly judge this song because everything is too damn LOUD! And god that acid synth just ruined it.

You need to get a bit better dude - thats all I gotta say.

"you wont like my reviews as much as other ppls.."

date: November 16, 2006

as I am more critical.. for the good of all that is. So you made this on a ps2? Interesting... unfortunately I must say the stereo quality is terrible. It peaks a LOT - if it wasnt for the terrible stereo quality this would indeed be a stellar song - however - the stereo is r4eally bad - sorry :(

submission: A world so cold

2 sexy ppl making music together :P

vocals had a bit of fuzz in the bg.. but otherwise its pretty nice ^^ - guitar is really nice - bad_man's voice is like a combination of lars and fred durst's.. but in a good way hehe :P - the wind at the beginning was a nice touch - hehe I'm glad I didn't enter this competition ^^

but yes overall nice! But who is doing the duet? Is that the same person? Neways it sounds cool :p

the whole song could use some polish here and there but overall its a pretty good song :P

hehe typing at the end..

-shawn-

Author's Response:

hehe, yeah...I guess that was some sexorz right there for ya. ;)

Yepp, bad_man did the "duet" because we had problems because of the deadline. Also, the fuzz was because bad_man's mic. was a bitch back then.

Anyways, glad you enjoyed the song chron!

"im sure this is a nice song.."

date: November 2, 2006

sadly I don't have my headphones on me so I am just gonna respond to your response of your other review - you were confused about my desctription of "home in the audio field"

what almost EVERYONE on this site doesnt realize is that the stereo field is not limited to left and right - there is foreground.. middleground.. and background. and also up and down.

here is how it works:

what you are used to:

pan left - pans to the left
do nothing - keeps it in the middle
pan right - pans it to the right

what is left:

bring to forward stereo field - increase high end
send to back stereo field - decrease high end
rise up - increase volume and a bit of the low end
lower down - decrease volume and a bit of the low end
buff up middle spectrum - increase middle end

^--all eq stuff btw--^

a combination of all this stuff will treat your song as if it is in a 3d sphere instead of a flat piece of paper.

Also investing in some good filters to widen your songs a lot will give you a bigger bubble to work with :p

hope this helps!

and some more advice:

bass and low instruments are best in the back spectrum
main instrument is best inm the middle
accompanying instruments are best in the front left and right
and drums can be with middle left and right or back left and right

and some pretty subttle reverbing for proper everything and you should be good :P

hope that helps!

-shawn-

Author's Response:

Wow, great write up! Very concise and straight to the point, hopefully some people will find this :)

One thing that I would add though is reverb. You mentioned it briefly, but it is extremely important for depth perception, especially with acoustic instruments.

I'm quite familiar with all of the techniques you mentioned, but I am aiming for a realistic orchestral replication. Although it would neat to have sounds surround the listener, it just isn't realistic (although there have been pieces that surround the audience with instruments scattered around the concert hall).

I'll try to incorporate these more into my electronic works, though. Used in moderation, they can add some sparkle to a piece :).

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated!

that this is the first ever remix of yours that I am disappointed in.

Honestly I expected more from you - the piano and the harp were steller man - i was really happy to hear those parts - but the rest - wtf? They werent inpactful at all! And their volume was less than desirable.. and some parts were off sync but I'll forgive you for that.. and .. ya.. perhaps if i hadnt done a version of this as well.. but compared to mine.. there were just too many parts that failed my expectations of you. I'm sorry.

-shawn-

Author's Response:

Yeah Chron... I will agree. This was as generic as I get. I appologize for this. I had an artificial environment when mixing this and it sounded a lot better on my headphones..... sadly I'm disappointed in myself as well. Glad you agree with me.

submission: RWBPTSA

well at last I get some time to review this.. intro.. needs something,, not sure what.. something to fill it out a bit.. perhaps ambianec in the bg.. ya thatd help. Nothing to focus your mind of.. maybe cave ambiance.. that sort of thing.. I like the main synth tho.. not sure what it is tho.

It does hit the sense rather nicely tho.. a nice variety in the stereo spectrum.. you need to listen to more 3d sogns tho.. you got lots of nice stuff.. its all up too close too.. you'r ingoring the background.. its like making a diorama and making the background BLACK. You gotta add more dimension.. layers and layers of soundyou got acceptable layers.. they will satisfy most ppl.. but not me hehe :P

and.. so it ends.. it needs more direction hehe.. didnt really add up to much.. I realize its more of an ambiant listen but it has to LEAD to something regardless.. Neways hope my rantings and musings helped you out.. was just kind of thinknig out loud as I went hehe.. :P

ya this is a kewl little thing - has vast potential ^^ - see its different from your others tho because you aded a main instrument - your others are more like background music - they all lack something :P

-shawn-

Author's Response:

what they lack is a few more 5's and a couple of hunderd downloads! heh heh.

you rucklo and kingbastard all seem to have a sorta similar style.. I should try and use Reaktor more.. I can always just internally record the samples I guess.. the guitar sounds amazing man! I thought you actually recorded it hehe.. as for glitchiness.. it coulda been a bit more structured :P

good job..

(how the fuck do you add a score to something like this..?)

-shawn-

Author's Response:

Holy bejeezus! - Sorry I didn't see your review(s) earlier. It's a rare treat to get a few comments from one of my favorite Canadians!

As for me, rucklo and KB all having a similar style - that's because we're all so fucking cool! :D

Reaktor internal recording - I do it one of two ways, I either record samples from within Reaktor and mix them in another program or I use R5 as a VST from within another host.

The comment about more structure sort of threw me a little - A few others have commented on how "random" that some of my stuff is or how unstructured that it is. In fact, I feel that it's usually extremely structured - just very complex. That said, reality is based on belief and if everyone else thinks it's too unstructured then maybe it is. It is etirely possible that my own perception is distorted - after all, most people might only listen to one of my tracks once or twice where I've heard certain sections fifty or a sixty times. What I come to think of as tight, others may feel that it's just too... random... :D

As for how to score it - you probably shouldn't.

Thanks Chron, you made my day by dropping me a few reviews!
